Aug 27, 2009 (The West Australian – ABIX via COMTEX) — The major Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold project pursued by Rio Tinto has been given the green light by the Mongolian Government, after a series of delays since 2006. The $A5bn development has received an exemption from a new tax on mining gains, as its start date of 2013 at the earliest falls outside the scope of the law. The “go ahead” received from the parliament will be a relief to Rio CEO Tom Albanese, who had been driving the project from the start.

A YOUNG man was plucked from the sea in a dramatic helicopter rescue yesterday.
The man was kayaking with friends when he capsized between Sandwick and the nearby island of Mousa, Shetland, at lunchtime.
Shetland Coastguard said rough seas made it impossible for the man to climb back into his kayak.
One of the group made it back to the shore and raised the alarm, and the coastguard helicopter and lifeboat were scrambled.
The man managed to cling to his friend’s kayak while they waited for help to arrive

In the midst of mounting food costs, Giant Food Storesin Cumberland Co unty is exp anding its discount-product line.
The Guaranteed Value line will increase the number of its products from about 50 to 140 by October. The items generally cost 20 to 25 percent less than similar national brands.

The residential real estate market in the New Orleans metropolitan area saw a drop in prices and construction activity during the first half of 2009 when compared with the same period last year, according to a report released today.
For the first six months of 2009, 1,132 permits for single- family homes contractor beverly hills were issued, down 31.4 percent from the 1,651 permits issued during the same period last year.
That puts home construction in the metro area on a pace to not exceed 2,300 to 2,400 permits for the year.
“This would mark a new low for home construction this decade and force one to look back to the very dark days of the 1980s oil and gas crash for comparably low levels of activity,” the report says.
The average single-family home price fell by 3.7 percent through the first half of 2009. That’s after falling 4.3 percent from 2006 to 2007 and 1.4 percent from 2007 to 2008.
For the first half of this year, the average price for a home sold using a real estate agent was $197,665, down from $205,256 in the first half of last year.
The biggest pullback in home construction in the metro area has taken place in St. Tammany Parish, where just under 268 single- family permits were issued in the first half of this year, a drop of 53.4 percent from the same period last year. Home construction has also fallen sharply in Jefferson Parish, where permits for 2009 are lagging behind 2008′s pace by 53.1 percent.

This investigation aimed to develop psychometric instruments that measure attitudes toward participating in cancer treatment trials (CTs) and cancer prevention trials (CPTs), that is, the Attitudes Toward Cancer Trials Scales (ACTS). A conceptualized construct of attitudes toward CTs and CPTs guided the writing of items for psychometric measurement. An expert panel assessment condensed reduced items to 116, and these were formatted into a self-report written survey. Data collection occurred within multiple settings, targeting an ethnically diverse sample ( N = 312). Item and principal component analyses empirically supported the Attitudes Toward Cancer Trials Scales (ACTS), a 2 -dimensional instrument containing an 18-item CT scale (four components) and a 16-item CPT scale (3 components) with Cronbach’s alpha values of .86 and .89, respectively. Four components comprised the CT scale: personal benefits, personal barriers and safety, personal and social value, and trust in the research process. Three components comprised the CPT scale: personal barriers and safety, altruism, and personal value. Early evidence of the internal consistency reliability and construct validity of the ACTS was provided by the sample.
