Market Wire, October, 2009
SEK continues to lend record
volumes to the Swedish export industry. The volume of new customer
financing for the first nine months of the year amounted to Skr
84.0 billion, which was an increase of Skr 42.8 billion on the
same period in 2008. Earnings also increased significantly real estate for sale by owner during
the period.
-- The volume of new customer financing solutions was Skr 84.0
billion (41.2)
-- The outstanding volume of offers for credits was as of
September 30 Skr 117.0 billion (Skr 27.4 billion at the end of
2008).
-- New borrowing amounted to Skr 91.0 billion (68.1)
-- Operating profit (IFRS) for the first nine months of the year
was Skr 1,674.8 million (376.8)
-- Adjusted operating profit (Core Earnings) for the first nine
months of the year was Skr 1,262.2 million (464.0)
SEK’s volume of new customer financing for the first nine months
of the year reached a record level and was higher than total
lending for 2008. This significant increase in volume – due mainly
to the substantially higher volume of export credits and lending
to Swedish exporters – shows that the Swedish export industry’s
demand for financing remains strong.
The volume of offers at the end of the period amounted to Skr
117.0 billion, compared with Skr 27.4 billion at the end of 2008.
“Our record volumes show that we play a very important role for
Swedish exports. In cooperation with other participants in the
financial market, we have been able to meet the industry’s
financing needs throughout this period of financial turmoil,” said
SEK’s President Peter Yngwe.
SEK’s funding operations have been successful during the period.
The volume of new borrowing was Skr 91.0 billion, which was Skr
4.8 billion more than the total new borrowing for 2008.

Google’s Gmail service recently went down for almost two hours (see macworld.com/5278 for details). Google said that overloaded servers paper shredding caused the outage–the same excuse it gave in May after a similar interruption.
When applications and data reside on servers around the Net, as Google’s Gmail data does, this is called cloud computing. Some pundits say that in the future, this will be how we’ll store most of our apps and data. Many tech companies are betting on it. Google’s Chrome operating system will rely heavily on Web access and Web-based applications, as will Microsoft Office 2010′s online edition. Microsoft is also working on its own Web OS, Midori

The Hartford Construction Group Broadens Wrap-Up Capabilities For Public-Private Partnerships
by admin on Oct.30, 2009, under Uncategorized
Business Wire, Oct 29, 2009
Insurer offers customized programs that integrate insurance
protection, loss control and claims services for major infrastructure
projects
HARTFORD, Conn. — As federal, state and local governments look for cost effective ways to
address critical infrastructure needs, they are turning to private
investment partners to fund these types of large scale projects. To
address the evolving insurance needs of contractors involved in
public-private partnerships, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc.
has expanded its construction wrap-up capabilities to create integrated
insurance programs designed specifically for major infrastructure
projects.
Wrap-up programs typically allow developers, owners or general
contractors to provide and coordinate insurance for all subcontractors
on a project by bundling coverage into a single consolidated program for
the duration of a job. However, in a public-private partnership, a
private contractor may be taking on additional functions during the
project, such as the operation or maintenance of a roadway, which create
exposures that are beyond the scope of a traditional wrap-up program.
With large transportation, healthcare, education and energy
construction projects being built across the country, public-private
partnerships present tremendous opportunities for contractors, but they
also present unique risk management challenges that require specially
tailored programs, said Bill Sullivan, vice president of The Hartford
Construction Group.
The Hartford has developed an approach to public-private partnerships
that integrates insurance protection, loss control and claims services
in a single, customized program that is focused on minimizing gaps and
reducing questions regarding coverage for the different entities
involved in these projects.
Public-private partnerships typically have a unique set of risk
characteristics that require customized underwriting and loss control
services, said Sullivan. The Hartfords dedicated wrap-up team works
closely with brokers to develop tailored programs that address the
specific exposures of a particular project.
The Hartford has written wrap-ups for several major private development
and infrastructure projects this year.
General contractors and brokers are looking for comprehensive coverage,
strong loss control, claims and RMIS (risk management information
systems) capabilities, and flexible customer service, said Jim
Williamson, assistant vice president of wrap-up programs at The
Hartford. We tailor programs to help these contractors control and
reduce their risk-related expenses.
The Hartford offers wrap-up capabilities for major construction
projects, including:
- New, expansion or renovation projects or maintenance work;
-
Private or public projects such as manufacturing facilities, highways
and bridges, power plants, pipelines, hospitals, universities,
stadiums, arenas, casinos, transportation hubs and shopping malls; - Single or multiple project sites;
-
Owner-Controlled Insurance Programs (OCIP) for project owners and
Contractor-Controlled Insurance Programs (CCIP) for general
contractors.

I’M THE secretary of our local allotment society. In December, a car smashed into the gates. The accident was reported and the police took details. I contacted the driver’s insurance company, Swiftcover, and sent details of the estimated cost of repairs in writing as requested, but have heard nothing since. We need this settled as the gates are in a dangerous state.

SWIFTCOVER says it was not told that the driver had damaged the gates until May, five months after the incident.
It contacted the driver, but he didn’t respond to inquiries. It then asked for the police report to verify your version of events and says that had this confirmed what you said, it would have met the claim in full.

PM urged to act on asbestos; HOPE FOR LUNG DISEASE VICTIMS
by admin on Oct.30, 2009, under Uncategorized
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 29, 2009
Byline: WILL GREEN
GORDON Brown will today face crunch talks with MPs demanding justice for victims of pleural plaques.
The Prime Minister and Justice Secretary Jack Straw will be under intense pressure at the meeting after Mr Brown yesterday admitted a “resolution” was needed to help sufferers of the asbestos-related condition.
The developments come as last-ditch efforts are made to get legislation through Parliament to overturn a 2007 Law Lords ruling that snatched the right to compensation for victims of pleural plaques – a scarring of the lungs caused by exposure to asbestos.
The legislation has already passed through the Commons, but now faces a time squeeze in the Lords before the current session of Parliament ends in a few weeks.
Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn challenged Mr Brown at Prime Minister’s Questions as The Chronicle campaign to get justice for hundreds of pleural plaques victims on Tyneside continues to win widespread support.
The Labour MP asked: “Will the Prime Minister ensure that any announcement by the Justice Secretary on pleural plaques ensures the commitment to compensate pleural plaques victims from the past, the present and the future?” Mr Brown said he recognised “anxieties” that people diagnosed with pleural plaques had and highlighted the large amount of medical inquiries into this “very big” issue.
“I know too that those who end up suffering from asbestosis suffer from one of the worst and most painful diseases imaginable and it is right that we have the proper compensation in place for them.
“I am looking forward to meeting him (Stephen Hepburn) and a group of MPs tomorrow to discuss this very issue with the Justice Secretary.
“It is important that after the legislation that has come before the House of Commons that we get a resolution to this soon,” the Prime Minister added.
He and Justice Secretary Jack Straw will now meet Mr Hepburn along with Blaydon MP Dave Anderson and Easington’s John Cummings this morning.
Speaking later, Mr Hepburn said: “I promised to keep up the pressure on this issue.
“It’s one I care passionately about and I know for certain that many people in former mining and industrial areas in the North East and elsewhere feel the same.
“I will use every opportunity I can to impress this on the Prime Minister and all relevant ministers. We want justice and we won’t stop until we get it.”
Labour MP Dave Anderson said: “I am glad that the two people that can resolve this for the people of Britain are meeting us today and hopefully we will be able to resolve this.”
home remedies for hemroids Ministers also came under pressure with unions holding a rally in Westminster to press the case for pleural plaques sufferers.
Alan Ritchie, general secretary of construction union UCATT said: “It is essential that the Government brings forward proposals which reverse the Law Lords decision so that pleural plaques victims can claim compensation and the liability of negligent employers can be established.
“There is clearly a logjam, which has massively delayed the Government’s response. These problems must be resolved so that compensation can be restored. “UCATT are entirely committed to working with the Government to resolve these issues.”
He added: “Vested interests have spun many lies and distortions about pleural plaques including the suggestion the condition is benign and causes no mental or physical harm.
“It is essential that everyone involved in the campaign makes sure that the truth is told and such untruths are not given credence.”
