I am one of those people who never carries a credit card balance. In my 20s, I carried thousands of dollars of credit card balance. Yes, Virginia, you can charge textbooks and even college classes. I spent a couple of years digging out from under that debt.
Since then, I vowed “never again” to be at the mercy of credit card companies. Don’t get me wrong – I think credit cards are essential and sometimes even good. Try renting a car without one

Research and Markets Adds Report: Global Location Based Services

Research and Markets has announced the addition of the “Global Location Based Services (LBS) Market 2008-2012″ report to its offerings.
In a release, Research and Markets noted that report highlights include:
Location Based Services (LBS) provide location specific services to users through Global Positioning System (GPS) or wireless network. Services that are offered by LBS include navigation and mapping of points of interests, weather information, tracking field force, etc. These applications leverage the user’s physical location to provide the desired information to the user.
Some of the factors that are primarily driving the Location Based Services market include: demand from the business, consumer and public sector; development and mass adoption of enabling technologies such as GPS, location enabled Wi-Fi, and terrestrial network; increasing mobile phone user base; rising consumerism and tracking and monitoring needs.
The Location Based Services market has been witnessing an increasing competition due to the entry of new players. This has led to an intense price competition between vendors; resulting in reduction of subscription prices for location based services, and thus reducing the revenue of service providers. Further, increased competition is forcing the service providers to offer more applications such as yellow pages, weather information, route displays with voice prompts, etc., to retain their existing customer and differentiate their service offerings from their competitors.
The report by TechNavio Insights forecasts the size of the Global Location Based Service Market over the period 2008-2012. It segments the market into three geographic regions: Americas, APAC, and EMEA, representing the market size and forecast for each of these regions

ATLANTA — Four North Carolina patients at a single hospital tested positive for a type of swine flu that is resistant to Tamiflu, health officials said Friday.
The cases reported at Duke University Medical Center over six weeks make up the biggest cluster seen so far in the U.S.
Tamiflu — made by Switzerland’s Roche Group — is one of two flu medicines that help against swine flu, and health officials have been closely watching for signs that the virus is mutating, making the drugs ineffective.
More than 50 resistant cases have been reported in the world since April, including 21 in the U.S. Almost all in the U.S. were isolated, said officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The BBC reported another cluster of five Tamiflu-resistant cases this week in Wales.
The CDC has sent three disease investigators to North Carolina to help in the investigation there, said Dave Daigle, a CDC spokesman

Admiral loses wind from sails at half year
by admin on Nov.19, 2009, under Uncategorized
0 Comments | Western Mail (Cardiff, Wales), August 24, 2009
MOTOR insurance group Admiral reports back on half-year trading tomorrow with expectations high after it delivered a record profits haul for 2008.
The group’s UK business, which includes the brands Diamond, Bell and elephant.co.uk as well as comparison website Confused.com, gave cheer to both staff and investors after the bumper year with a pounds 4.5m shares bonus to employees and a 20% dividend hike.
It increased profits by 11% to pounds 202.5m last year and said turnover rose 13% to pounds 910m.
Admiral’s UK arm drove the improvement after customer numbers increased 15% to 1.59m and profits from car insurance lifted 27% to pounds 179.9m.
The Cardiff-based group also increased insurance rates by 4%, while it benefited from lower claims frequency.
Analysts are expecting the robust trading to have continued, although the consensus in the City is for slower profits growth in the six months to June 30, at 2% to pounds 102.7m.
This would represent a marked easing from the 11% annual growth and the 16% hike year-on-year at the interim stage last year.
Numis Securities analysts expect a lower profits contribution from Confused.com, which has been spending heavily on marketing to offset fierce competition in the comparison site sector.
In the full-year Confused’s profits fell 30% to pounds 25.6m and Numis expects half year profits to have fallen from pounds 13.7m to pounds 1.9m.
But the core business is said to be strong, with analysts at Merrill Lynch looking for growth in both motor rates and the number of insured vehicles.
“We expect a robust set of results that will affirm the strength of Admiral’s franchise,” said Merrill.

MillerCoors Donates More Than One Million Dollars to Thurgood Marshall College Fund
by admin on Nov.19, 2009, under Uncategorized
Market Wire, November, 2009
MillerCoors recently announced a donation of
$1.3 million during the annual Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF)
Leadership Institute and 22nd anniversary dinner weekend in New York City.
The dinner raised a record $6.2 million and these funds will be used to
assist in leadership development, programmatic support, scholarship and
capacity-building for the 47 public Historically Black Colleges and
Universities (HBCUs) served by the Fund. Over the past 22 years, the TMCF
has awarded more than $100 million in support of students attending public
HBCUs.
“As the founding corporate sponsor, MillerCoors recognizes the importance
of supporting the next generation of political leaders, entrepreneurs and
CEOs. And this donation is just an example of our continued and unwavering
commitment to encouraging the dreams and aspirations of students,” shared
Larry Waters, TMCF board member and MillerCoors director of multicultural
relations.
Also, during the Prestige Awards program, MillerCoors gifted a collection
of artwork to showcase in TMCF’s New York and Washington D.C. offices. As
a part of the historic “Gallery of Greats Calendar Series,” whose proceeds
supported the TMCF Fund, the 2003 collection, titled “Turning Dreams into
Reality,” acknowledged and celebrated the presidents of TMCF member HBCUs.
“Given the impetus for the program, it is fitting that this collection will
have a home at the Fund in honor of the legacies of outstanding African
Americans. As presidents and chancellors of TMCF schools, these honorees
helped direct the paths of future leaders and young professionals,” stated
Waters.
In addition to the financial support of the Fund, MillerCoors provides real
world experience for TMCF students through its summer internship program
with students interviewing on-site during this year’s career fair.
Students are considered for available positions in the corporate offices
and other locations of MillerCoors. “Our intern program provides an
extraordinary opportunity for selected students to attain that much needed
experience, as they manage real projects with the accountability and
responsibility for their success,” continued Waters. Interested students

On-demand email and one-to-one marketing solutions provider ExactTarget announced what it called the industry’s first software as a service email integration with Pivotal Veracity’s patent- pending MailboxIQ technology.
The company stated that the integration gives email marketers the ability to track deliverability, reputation and recipient platform preferences at the customer level with insight on how messages perform across mobile, social, search and traditional Web and software-based email platforms.

“Marketers have relied upon anecdotal information for years to understand what happens to their messages when they arrive at their subscribers’ mailbox,” said Chip House, ExactTarget’s vice president of industry and relationship marketing. “MailboxIQ is a game- changer because it provides real-time data at the subscriber level on whether the email was delivered to the inbox, spam folder or blocked entirely.”
ExactTarget explained that traditional approaches to deliverability assurance relied on sending test messages to a small list of marketer-owned email addresses to identify how an internet service provider like Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo would handle the message. While the tests identified where the messages were delivered – inbox or spam folder – they didn’t provide insight into how subscriber actions affected long-term sender reputation tracked at the major email providers.
“Many of the large internet service providers are now looking at deliverability differently,” House said. “They may allow a sender’s message through to one subscriber’s inbox while delivering the same message to someone else’s spam folder based on their history of deleting messages from the sender.”
In addition to tracking inbox and spam folder placement, MailboxIQ gives marketers the ability to identify how subscribers interact with email messages on mobile devices and via social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter or MySpace.
“ExactTarget’s integration with MailboxIQ provides a game- changing on-demand solution that gives marketers a level of insight into subscriber behavior not seen in any other platform in the industry,” said Deirdre Baird, founder and chief executive officer, Pivotal Veracity
