What’s trendy now? Looking like you’ve just stepped in from a snowball fight in the brisk winter air, says Jessa Blades, a New York City-based makeup artist, organic beauty consultant and owner of Blades Natural Beauty (jessablades.com). This means a pretty flush on your cheeks, a berry lip color and sheer, shimmery eye shadows that look like snowflakes landed on your eyelids, and dark gray liner for definition. “This look is so great because you can create a very subtle look for day and then add an extra coat of eyeliner and lip color to play up the drama for evening,” says Blades. Whether you keep it sheer or pump it up, it’s a clean and natural take on the traditional heavy red lipstick and dark eyes you so often see during the holidays.
lips
Instead of a traditional red, traditional red, matte holiday lipstick, freshen your look with a berry color that makes your lips look like you just ate a bowl of cranberries, raspberries or beets. For day, try a gloss; for evening, deepen the intensity of the color with a lipstick.
Try: (a) Aubrey Organics Natural Lips Sheer Tint in Sheer Pink ($8; aubrey organics.com); (b) Physicians Formula Plump Potion Needle-Free Plumping Lipstick in Mauveberry Potion ($10; drugstore.com); (c) Aveda Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color in Passion Flower ($14; aveda.com)
eyes
Draw attention to your eyes with three coats of mascara and a smoky gray eyeliner. To really make your eyes stand out, apply liner over and under your lash line (gently lift your lid and run the liner under your lashes). A sheer wash of a light shimmer shadow makes your lids appear larger. If you have peachy skin, look for pink shimmer tones. Darker skin? Go for festive silver.
Try: (d) Josie Maran Eye Shadow in Sweetheart ($20; sephora.com); (e) Pur Minerals Pressed Mineral Eye Shadow in Chrome Cryolite ($13; pur minerals.com); (f) Jane Iredale Eye Pencil in Black/Grey ($9; janeiredaledirect.com)
cheeks
In the winter, when skin tones are the lightest, blush can counter a sallow look and brighten your face, making you look more awake. Opt for one that mimics the color in your cheeks when you exercise. To apply, smile–then brush the blush on the round bump that appears, blending out toward your ears
